Gurbaksh Chahal | Seven Things in Life That Dictate Your Happiness
Your Friends
The biggest threat can sometimes be the people you surround yourself with. It’s important to be surrounded by those who only want the best for you.
Who you eat with, is who you will become. Keep away from the naysayers, darkness resides there.
Trust your gut. We are complicated creatures. That inexplicable feeling you get sometimes—well, it tends to be right a lot more often than it is wrong. Try not to overanalyze it. Some mysterious Inner You is trying to help out by pointing you in the right direction.
Your Work
For many, they work to live. And with that, you land in a position you’re typically not too happy with. You do things you don’t’ necessarily want to do.
Sometimes you need to do things you don’t want to do, but regardless of that, you must always work your hardest, and work towards something you love. That’s when purpose meets reality.
If you’re going to spend a large portion of your life working, listen to your heart. We tend to do well at things we love, so find something you love—or learn to love what you’re doing.
Your Hobbies
It’s important to find some activities outside of eating, sleeping, and working. A hobby to fill time should be both enjoyable and beneficial to you as an overall person. The best scenario would be to have this hobby be your passion, and your career. Don’t do anything by half-measures. Remember: Mediocrity is for losers.
Your Health
If you lose your health, you lose your life. This must always be your first priority regardless of what comes up. After all, your journey begins and ends with this.
Your Stress
Sometimes you need to just disconnect. Go for a run, read a book, play a sport, or go to the beach. Not only will it be good for you as a person, but who knows? While you’re at ease you may think of your next great idea.
The only person in charge of your happiness is you. You don’t own all the problems in the world. Count your blessings, not your problems. Be grateful, because if you’re reading this, you’re already way ahead of billions others in this world. It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full; the only thing that matters is that you have a glass and your responsible for what you pour into it.
Your Time
Time is your most valuable asset. You can choose to use it on your side, or it can work against you at the same time.
A famous writer once said, “Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” In other words, let passion dictate the 86,400 seconds you share with the world each day.
Your Ability to Forgive
Most people believe in revenge, but I’ve realized that’s just negative energy that precludes happiness. We all run into people in our lives that test us, use us, hurt us or even disappoint us, but revenge doesn’t serve a purpose. God’s Karma takes care of that, and if you’re lucky he’ll let you watch it whenever that happens. But, focus on letting go and forgiveness. Go as far as, praying for anyone that might have hurt you. At the end of the day, we are all characters of a complicated universe. Why complicate it further by letting vengeance devour your day. If you forgive, you learn and move on.
Never regret a single character in your journey. If they weren’t part of your destination, they were just preparation.
