a product for everyone usually becomes urgent for nobody.
founders resist this because choosing feels like shrinking. every excluded customer looks like lost revenue. every broad sentence feels like a larger market.
the market does not reward theoretical inclusion.
it rewards relevance.
one customer needs the problem solved badly enough to change behavior, spend money, take risk, and forgive the early imperfections. build for that person first.
this does not mean the company must stay small. it means the company needs a place to become strong.
when you chase everyone, the product fills with compromise. one buyer wants speed. another wants control. another needs customization. another wants no setup. sales promises all of it because every deal feels necessary.
soon the product has many features and no center.
choosing a customer creates discipline. you learn their language, workflow, fear, budget, and definition of success. you know which feature matters and which one is somebody else's problem.
that knowledge compounds.
the narrower promise becomes more credible because the company can prove it repeatedly. referrals improve because customers know who else needs it. product decisions become faster because the team knows whose pain wins.
the hard part is saying no before the money feels safe.
use a simple test. which customer has the strongest pain, shortest path to value, clearest willingness to change, and the greatest chance of becoming proof for the next customer?
start there.
write down who is not the priority. this is not disrespect. it protects the customer from buying a product that will never serve them deeply and protects the team from pretending every request belongs on the roadmap.
serve them deeply enough that the market can see the difference.
expansion should come from strength, not panic. add another segment when the product, economics, and service can carry it without weakening the promise that created trust.
the first market is not a prison. it is a foundation.
you do not need everybody.
you need somebody who gives a damn.
find them.
